We are thrilled to share our latest publication by Ashkan Shiravand, M.Sc.!

Compliance is a fundamental physical property of blood vessels, influencing fluid dynamcs and, when medical devices are involved, their mechanical behaviour.

While compliance of thin-walled models is commonly described using the Laplace equation, block models – widely used in in vitro cardiovascular research – have lacked a dedicated mathematical framework. This gap has limited the development of systematic design approaches.

In his latest publication, Ashkan Shiravand introduces a closed-form mathematical fomulation for thick-walled and block models. This approach was validated using samples with increasing wall thickness, including both silicone and PVA hydrogels.

The study further explores compliance across frequencies up to 30 Hz, highlighting the critical role of viscoelastic material behaviour. These insights pave the way for more reliable and physiologically relevant conditions in fatigue testing.
