The Institute of Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering refers to the application of technical and technological knowledge, methods and instruments in the medicine with a focus on the interaction between the therapeutic or diagnostic system and the biological environment. The new chair of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart started in September 2019 and set a research focus on minimalinvasive, catheter-based technologies for the cardiovascular, neurovascular and pulmonary intervention. Solutions for miniaturization and integration are explored as a prerequisite for delivery in microcatheters and implantation in deep and hardly accessible body regions like in the heart, brain and lungs. Implant development and investigation are performed in an interdisciplinary and synergistic approach in the research fields of biology, biochemistry, material science and medicine.

Courses at BMT offer students knowledge and methodic in designing, realization and testing of biomedical catheters and implant. Basics of biomedical engineering including measurement, imaging and modelling are treated in lessons and applied in practical courses. Selected topics in the fields of organ support and replacement, (micro)fluidic in biological systems, drug delivery as well as radiation therapies complete the curriculum.
